Our Story

From our founding roots, tracing back half a century ago to 1967, when our founder, Lesley Sinclair, first started the ACS journey, to what ACS looks like today, and what we envision for the future.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: To turn compassion into action! This is a lifesaving mission for dogs and cats in our community and is possible through the following actions:

Welcome to
Animal Care Sanctuary

Thanks to our supporters, Animal Care Sanctuary has been preventing cruelty to animals and helping thousands of animals find homes for over 55 years. More than an animal shelter, Animal Care Sanctuary is a thought leader taking bold action to solve animal overpopulation and homelessness. ACS is a destination shelter for so many rescues because we have spent years positioning ourselves to be on the forefront of the latest in sheltering and shelter medicine.

Our state-of -the-art veterinary clinic provides comprehensive care to thousands of dogs and cats each year. True to our mission we spay and neuter over 4000 animals each year. We are a community partner providing holistic care to our community animals. Besides rescue, adoption and access to medical care, ACS provides behavior advice to pet owners, grooming services and continued support to any animal in need.

We take our mission seriously. You will find Animal Care Sanctuary not just locally but in classrooms across the state bringing the lessons of kindness, compassion, and the human animal bond into classrooms to assure we are paving the way for a brighter future for animal. We offer an only of its kind in the country Pre-Veterinary College Internship program to assure we are leaving a legacy of access to veterinary care for decades to come.

At ACS, we strive every day to help animals’ live their best lives!

It is because of you and your support that we have been able to sustain and grow the work we do.

How your support allows Animal Care Sanctuary to help:

  1. Finding Homes for Animals
Each year Animal Care Sanctuary saves the lives of thousands of animals.  We partner with overcrowded shelters across the nation and the world to find homes for animals in need.
  2. Reducing Animal Overpopulation Nationwide
Each year our clinic spays/neuters thousands of animals locally and from partner shelters across the country.  ACS is leading the way to end animal overpopulation.
  3. Saving the Lives of Abused and Neglected Animals:
Our on-site veterinarians are able to treat animals that most animal shelters wouldn’t event accept. We treat heartworm disease, broken bones, and horrible cases of abuse.
  4. Reducing the Free Roaming Cat Population
ACS helps communities manage cat colonies through our transport spay/neuter program. We go out into communities in need and bring cats to ACS for surgery and then return the cats.  This cuts down by the thousands the number of free roaming cats in our community.
  5. Helping End the Nationwide shortage of Veterinarians:
Our Pre-Veterinary college internship program is known nationwide.  This program allows ACS to do our part in helping end the nationwide veterinarian shortage and train future veterinarians in the unique challenges of shelter medicine.
  6. Humane Education
Animal Care Sanctuary offers a comprehensive humane education initiative that we take into local classrooms at teacher request every year. We are uniquely positioned to teach kindness, compassion, and the power of the human animal bond. This program is raising the next generation of the animal welfare movement.
  7. Helping Families care for and keep their pets for a lifetime:
Each year ACS helps hundreds of families by providing pet food and low-cost/no-cost medical care to any family who needs help- this keeps pets with the families that love them.
  8. Keeping our Community Safe by helping end the outbreak of deadly disease.
Each year ACS provides thousands of vaccinations to keep our animals and community safe. Pennsylvania has one of the highest numbers of rabies cases in the nation.  We are doing our part providing rabies vaccinations to assure the animals in our community stay safe and we keep animal owners up to date with the rabies vaccination laws in Pennsylvania
  9. Fighting Animal Cruely
Lesley Sinclair founded Animal Care Sanctuary to save animals from cruelty. Today we have come so far in laws to protect animals but only because organizations like ACS have spent years advocating for laws to protect animals.
  10. Canine and Feline Behavior
Modification to assure we are adopting safe pets and allow our cats and dogs the best chance at finding a forever home.
