The Volunteer and Education Coordinator works as part of a team to oversee the Volunteer Program as well as the Education Program in accordance with the Animal Care Sanctuary (ACS) Strategic Plan goals. This position directs the recruitment, retention, and stewardship of volunteers for ACS as well as coordinates and implements education programs in the local, regional, and national community including on- and off-site visits. We are looking for someone who has a passion for humane education and animal welfare.

 

Job Responsibilities:

Volunteer Development Serves as liaison between volunteers, external partners, and ACS team members

· Develops and implements strategies to actively recruit and retain a diverse group of volunteers

· Works with ACS team to fill the needed volunteer openings on an ongoing basis

· Responds to inquiries regarding the volunteer program in an efficient and timely manner

· Completes in-person orientation of new volunteers and coordinates training of volunteers making sure all aspects of the process are in accordance with ACS’s mission and standard operating procedures

· Communicates regularly with volunteers through meetings, Facebook groups, and other avenues. Creates and produces a volunteer e-newsletter quarterly to keep volunteers informed on all things ACS

· Works to actively grow the volunteer program through individuals, community groups, corporations, etc.

· Provides volunteers continuous feedback and guidance when requested or required

· Develops and implements effective volunteer retention strategies. Implements and coordinates recognition/ reward programs to honor volunteers

· Confers with similar positions in other non-profit organizations to keep abreast of innovative best practices

· Reviews and regularly updates the volunteer handbook, volunteer job descriptions, department SOPs, and department forms as needed. Provides updates to the Volunteer section of the ACS website as needed

 

Humane Education Program

This goal of this program is to implement educational curriculum and activities designed to foster compassion, empathy, and the human animal bond for students in grades K-12. This program also encompasses a one-of-a-kind Pre-Veterinary College Internship program as well as a high school and vet tech internship program.

 

· Researches, develops, and updates curriculum, programs & activities to educate the community about animal welfare and the activities of Animal Care Sanctuary, ensuring

that the Education Program is in accordance with the organization’s mission and long-term strategic goals. Continually seeking advantageous partnerships with schools, clubs, corporate partners, and other organizations in relation to ACS’s education initiatives

· Helps build our unique College Internship Program by developing working partnerships with colleges/universities to continue to expand this program

· Work as part of the team that interviews and helps select our college interns

· Serve as liaison between ACS departments and staff and our interns

· Mentor and assure our student interns have a professional experience from move-in day though completion of their internship

· Work with the colleges and universities to assure our internship is meeting all educational requirements

· Implements birthday parties at the shelter

· Build strong lasting relationships with our ACS interns

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Bachelor’s degree

Teaching experience preferred.

Proficiency in MS Office required

Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. The ability to engage and connect with varying ages and backgrounds

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Animal Care Sanctuary (www.animalcaresanctuary.org) is seeking a positive individual who is committed to making an impact in the lives of animals. Animal caregivers are responsible for the overall care of resident animals at ACS by providing food, water, a clean environment, and environmental and behavioral enrichment. This position involves care for the animals in our custody. Job duties, detailed below, include daily cleaning of animal living spaces, feeding, monitoring animal health, and assisting the public with information and adoption tours. Applicants must be team players, possess a positive attitude, and be compassionate towards animals and humans. Customer service skills required for occasional interaction with visitors and volunteers.

 

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift, move, restrain, and manage animals weighing up to 100 lbs.

Must be able to lift 50lbs.

Must be able to stand, walk, crouch and bend for a majority of the workday.

Must be able to use hands and arms working above shoulder level.

 

Work Conditions:

Consistent exposure to outdoors, animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available.

Subject to exposure to bites, scratches, unpleasant odors and noises, infectious waste, and disease. Training in appropriate handling skills and disinfections protocols to reduce these risks will be provided, however some level of risk is always present.

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

Daily cleaning of animal living spaces, including frequent cleaning of kennels, communals or cages and use of properly diluted cleaning/disinfecting chemicals.

Observe animals’ appearance and activity daily to monitor the animal’s physical condition and mental well-being. Training will be provided on animal behavior and signs and symptoms of illness; caregivers are expected to monitor animals in their care for any indication of illness or poor well-being.

Daily feeding and watering of the animals per the requirements set by the Director and the veterinary staff.

Daily exercise of animals as assigned.

Assist in preventing disease transmission in the shelter by adhering to cleaning protocols and infection control procedures.

 

Customer Service:

Assist visitors and volunteers with general information when needed.

Present a professional, friendly, and helpful attitude when interacting with the public.

Show animals for visitors and provide information about specific animals on request.

 

Qualifications:

Must be able to work weekends and holidays as assigned.

High school education or equivalent.

Higher education preferred.

Animal handling experience preferred.

Ability to work both independently and within a team structure.

Ability to follow directions and established standards of operation.

Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
